Schoolchildren have access to milk and sugary drinks at lunch, but not water

Some school districts around the country have taken drastic measures to improve childhood health by banning sugary soda beverages from their cafeterias, but according to the Los Angeles Times millions of California schoolchildren -- and probably millions of children in other states as well -- currently have no access to drinking water during lunchtime.

Schools are required to have a certain number of water fountains on campus per number of students, but in many cases, they are not located in or near school lunchrooms. So the only lunchtime drink options for many children is either plain or chocolate pasteurized milk, and maybe some sweetened juice product.

In California, 40 percent of school districts that responded to a California Food Policy Advocates (CFPA) survey indicated that their students have no access whatsoever to free drinking water during lunch. Thyroid nodules

Thyroid nodules are lumps which commonly arise within an otherwise normal thyroid gland.

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck, just below your Adam's apple - about where you'd put a bow tie. Although it weighs less than an ounce, the thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate every aspect of your metabolism, from your heart rate to how quickly you burn calories.

Sometimes normal thyroid tissue begins to grow, causing one or more nodules to develop within the gland. The great majority of these solid or fluid-filled lumps are noncancerous (benign) and don't cause any symptoms. In fact, you often won't know you have a nodule until your doctor discovers it during a routine medical exam.

Some nodules, however, may become large enough to press on your windpipe (trachea) or your esophagus, making it uncomfortable or difficult to swallow. A few may begin producing excess amounts of thyroid hormone, leading to hyperthyroidism, a condition marked by unintended weight loss, sleep problems and irritability. How Is Heart Valve Disease Treated?

Treatment for heart valve disease depends on the type and severity of valve disease. There are three goals of treatment for heart valve disease: protecting your valve from further damage; lessening symptoms; and repairing or replacing valves.

Protecting your valve from further damage.

If you have valve disease, you are at risk for developing endocarditis, a serious condition. People who have mitral valve prolapse without thickening or regurgitation/leaking are not at risk of developing endocarditis.

You are still at risk for endocarditis, even if your valve is repaired or replaced through surgery. To protect yourself:

Tell your doctors and dentist you have valve disease. You may want to carry an identification card with this information.
